1. Stay Ahead with Smart Hydration

Hot weather means more sweating and more risk of dehydration. Try to drink between 500 and 750 ml of fluids per hour, and even more if you’re really working hard. Don’t rely on thirst alone- sip often, and mix in electrolyte drinks to replace minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. It’s a simple shift that makes a big difference.

2. Don’t Forget Sunscreen

A long ride under the sun can quickly turn into a sunburn if you’re not protected. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen before you roll out, and don’t forget those often-missed spots like your ears and the back of your neck. Lightweight gear with built-in UV protection can add an extra layer of defence, and a cap under your helmet helps protect your scalp without adding heat. For longer rides, reapply sunscreen every couple of hours.

3. Dress for the Conditions

20–30°C (68–86°F): Mild to Warm

When it’s moderately warm (20–30°C), choose breathable, moisture-wicking jerseys and bib shorts, plus fingerless gloves for grip and ventilation. Light, ventilated socks and cycling shoes help prevent overheating, and sunglasses with UV protection shield your eyes from glare and wind. A well-ventilated helmet will keep things cool up top.

Above 30°C (86°F+): Hot Weather Gear

In hotter weather (above 30°C), you’ll want to go even lighter. Pick jerseys and shorts with mesh panels or open-weave fabric, and stick to light colors to reflect sunlight. Minimal padding in your gloves and shoes with vents or mesh uppers help avoid heat buildup. A pair of polarized, sunglasses offers both clarity and protection, while a helmet with wide ventilation channels and sweat-wicking padding can make a big difference on long rides.

4. Time Your Ride Right

The best time to ride in the summer is early morning or later in the evening when the sun is lower and temperatures are milder. If you’re riding mid-day, plan for shorter efforts, bring extra hydration, and take shade breaks when needed.

5. Cool Down When Needed

If you start to feel overheated, slow down, find some shade, and let your body recover. Pouring cool water on your arms, neck, or head can bring your temperature down quickly. A cold towel works wonders, too. Give yourself time to adapt, and don’t push too early. In extremely warm days, you will lose power and heart rate will rise. Most importantly, listen to your body. If it’s telling you to back off, it’s best to do so.
